Barn Door as Art Installation

Recently we took a trip back to my husband’s home place.  There is not much left standing there now but there is a remnant of an old barn.  Laying on the ground, under the rubble and a fallen tree Hubby spied this barn door.  It took a chain saw,  a circular saw, a crow bar and some muscle to get it out of the pile but I loved the look.

I knew immediately that I wanted this hanging above the teal French Provincial dresser we are using as our family room media center.

Don’t you love the weathered patina on the wood and the rust hinges?  There is a key hole on the other side of the door, but that side is boring so this side gets to be on display.  It is way too fragile to be a functional door, but still gets to be a part of our burb home.

Here is the wall before as a big burlap colored expanse with a large television being the only art.

I like the bright color with the worn wood, the fancy with the rustic, the juxtaposition of country and modern.  I also think that it provides my husband with a connection to the farm where he grew up and his parents who have both passed away.  My husband’s dad was always one to tease me about my junk, but was the first to stop and pick something up for me if I wanted it.  My son had an old metal hospital bed in his room when he was growing up that we rescued off the side of someone’s barn… with permission of course.

So, Hubby found the studs, marked them with painter’s tape and we figured out where it needed to hang.

He hung two backer boards into all the studs so that we could put the screws where they needed to be.

We knew it would be easier to figure out where the door needed to go then adjust where the media center was than the other way around.

Isn’t the color of the weathered wood beautiful against the teal dresser?

 

I am like the look but I may want to add to the wall still.  I wonder what I could find out there to make the wall interesting?

Any ideas? I am open to suggestion!
